“No. For several reasons:
“1. Legal issues.
“2. There may be restrictions on what SG can/can’t do or at least there
would be some debate over what activities are considered ‘work’ or not.
“3. Some students may only be involved in SG because they get paid.
Students who are in SG and do not get paid would probably be more passionate
about their work than a paid person because money is not what motivates
them.
“4. Complicates the system of who gets picked to be an officer.”

"Senators do not get paid, and receive no special
perks. Several senators have the opportunity to attend the COSGA conference
yearly. I dont have the exact number, but believe in years past two or three
senators attend COSGA. The conference registration, travel, and lodging are paid by
activity fees.

"I guess that depends on the school. For smaller schools, it
is harder to pay students because the student activity funds, where, at least our school,
the funding would come from. It is better for the different organizations to have more
money to program activities.
"No, it helps to compensate the officers from time they may
be working if not in the position."

"SGA president, with three other leaders, does get to live
in a plush house built in 1886 right in the middle of campus. There really are no other
perks outside of the intangible rewards of the job."
Source: Phil Ayres, 1996-97 SGA president, responded via web on 9/18/97
"It depends on the type of school. At a university like
ours, elected representatives are not paid. Most students are full-time. However, I can
see how other schools, such as commuter schools, might want to pay students to serve in
student government. The bottom line is, if the money would prevent you from having to take
up another job and devoting more time to your responsibilities in student government, then
payment is justified.
"We don't pay as a practice. Once again, I can see
arguments on both sides. After all, SGA leaders should be working very hard for their
student constituents."

“Yes, because we do so
much work for the students, rarely does anyone consider that we have lives
too. I love what I do for the students, yet I know it should be a paid
position. There is so much to get done and so little help. This is really a
full-time job to be effective.
“I believe a cash salary
would be most fitting. We have to live as well as others.”
Virginia Tech, VA
Type: public
Enrollment: 26,000
Name of SG: Student Government
SG's annual budget: $90,000 SG operating budget
Compensation: "None of the elected leaders get paid."
Source: Steve Schneider, 1997 SG president, responded by phone on 5/27/97
"A lot of people will say we should be and just as many
will say shouldn't be. I do it for personal satisfaction.
Honestly, it does cut into school work. My grades will suffer,
and that's a shame. I put SG above all of my priorities it's my number-one
priority. Some people will say that's bad."
"I know one person who was interested in running for
president and asked if we get paid anything. I know he didn't run because he didn't think
he could afford to. That's a shame.
