Maria Cancino
Editorial Assistant
Maria Cancino, 20, was born
in Guatemala, raised in Chile, and moved to Miami, Florida, in 1997. She
graduated from Miami Sunset Senior High School and is currently a journalism
sophomore at the
University of
Florida.
She was a freelancer for Univision Online in 2000 and has won awards
for poetry and essays in Spanish, her native language. Maria is a member of
the Florida Magazine Student Association and a volunteer with the Boggy
Creek Gang, an organization that helps children coping with chronic
illnesses and gives their families a weekend (or summer) of fun.
To Maria, history is her
passion, movies her distraction, and reading her pleasure. She dreams of
writing articles for Time magazine, meeting Isabel Allende, and
someday creating her own magazine.

Rachel Gomez
Editorial Assistant
Rachel
Gomez, 21, is a junior in magazine journalism at the
University of Florida.
Before interning at Oxendine Publishing, she was a high-school editorial
intern at Hispanic Magazine in
Coral Gables,
Florida
and wrote apartment community profiles for Welcome Magazine.
Currently, Rachel’s the Spotlight editor at INsite Magazine and a
member of UF’s Tower Yearbook and the Florida Magazine Student
Association.
Born and raised in
Miami, Florida, Rachel
graduated from G. Holmes Braddock High School in 2002 knowing she wanted to
pursue a degree in journalism at UF. She plans to return to South Florida
after graduation to get started in the magazine business.
At some point in the
future, Rachel hopes to intern or even work abroad, particularly in Italy,
for some time. Her other interests include sports and art history.

Leslie Hunt
Editorial Assistant
Leslie Hunt, 21, is an English and
psychology senior at the University of Florida. She's written for The
Independent Florida Alligator and is publishing her first short story in an
upcoming anthology called Short Attention Span Mysteries. When she's not
writing fiction or articles, she's hanging out with friends and her
boyfriend, downloading rock songs, reading the latest thriller novel, or
visiting her parents on their 100-acre farm in Lake City, Florida.

Morgan Moeller
Editorial Assistant
Morgan Moeller, 19, is a
senior magazine journalism major at the University of Florida. She obtained
her AA from the University of Central Florida and wrote for the student
newspaper, the Central Florida Future, for one semester.
A lifelong Gator, Morgan
decided it was high time to transfer to UF, where she really belonged. Upon
transferring, she began to write features for The Independent Florida
Alligator and completed an internship with the American Marketing
Association. She hopes to graduate in fall 2005 and write for a publication
near her hometown of Brandon, Florida.
When she's not busy with
school or writing, Morgan likes to lounge around, relax, and spend time with
her boyfriend.

Jenna Tighe

The University of Florida
now feels like home to Jenna Tighe, but she still misses the hot days and
sunny beaches of South Florida. Jenna, 20, hopes to major in journalism with
a strong emphasis in magazines. She’s currently a sophomore and in her
second semester interning at Oxendine Publishing.
With firm family ties in
South Florida, Jenna plans to graduate in 2007 and move back there to begin
a career in the magazine business and start a happy life. An alumnus of
McArthur High School’s class of 2003, she volunteers her time toward
community service whenever possible.

Sun Sentinel’s Next Generation page and was editor in chief of
McArthur High’s student newspaper for two years. She’s excited to be getting

Jennifer Wiley

Jennifer
Wiley, 20, is a third year student at the
University of Florida
majoring in magazine journalism with a minor in art history. She’s had
articles published in The Satellite, and her work also has been used
in a report put out by the National Coalition for the Homeless. She’s
currently looking into law school, but would also like to pursue a career in
reporting and writing. Through her internship with Oxendine Publishing, she
hopes to gain a better understanding of the magazine industry and hone her
writing skills under deadline.
Jennifer is a native of
Cape Coral, Florida, and enjoys all outdoor activities, creative endeavors,
and being actively involved in the community.

2004 Interns
Michelle Ertl
Editorial Assistant
Once a Jersey girl, Michelle, 21, currently
attends school at the University of Florida and is now an advocate of year
‘round flip-flops. She is entering her senior year as an English major and
has an enthusiasm for writing and professional editing.
Planning to continue her schooling in technical writing
and editing, Michelle hopes to earn her certificate in Professional Editing
from the University of Central Florida and later her master’s in the same
field. She dreams of one day working for a magazine or publishing company in
New York City and making sure to vacation at her family’s seaside bungalow
in Manasquan, New Jersey. In the immediate future, Michelle hopes to
graduate, take a cruise in the Caribbean, and finally pay off all her credit
card debt and student loans.
When she’s not busy supervising at Freshens, the
on-campus ice cream store or stressing about school and projects, Michelle
likes to run, cook dinner with friends, and play with her puppy, Bailey.
Elizabeth Hannum
Editorial Assistant
Elizabeth, 21, is a senior at the University of Florida and is having an
interesting time majoring in english. Born in a small town in Virginia,
Elizabeth spent the majority of her life in Naples, FL, causing her to never
be able to adapt to Gainesville's ever changing weather.
When Elizabeth is not on campus you can find her
working as a nanny for two children or at the gym in the ab attack class.
Elizabeth loves to read and her true love is singing, a talent she has that
many do not know about is her ability to sew.
In the fall Elizabeth is traveling to London to study
fashion design and styling and hopes to be able to afford a trip over to
Paris to see the real "Moulin Rouge," which is also her favorite film. After
her semester oversees Elizabeth will be graduating in May, and is still
unsure of which field of work she wants to go into. Her ideal job would be
to write a column like Carrie in Sex and The City or marry rich and be a
professional housewife.
Kaleena Thompson

Kaleena Thompson, 20, is a magazine
journalism student at the University of Florida. Her zeal for writing began
in third grade at her elementary school, where she published eight-page
books. Prior to coming to UF, she attended Seminole Community College and
was a staff writer for The Scribe newspaper.
Her post-college goals include working for a woman’s
magazine that seeks to encourage and uplift the reader, marrying Prince
Charming, and becoming fluent in Spanish.
Besides going to school, Kaleena enjoys being a part of
the Difference Campus Ministry at UF, reading historical and cultural
novels, and laughing hysterically with her friends.

Melanie De Jesus

Melanie, 21, is a senior at the
University of Florida and is majoring in journalism with a minor in Spanish.
Born and raised (for the
most part) in Vicenza, a small city in Northeast Italy, Melanie has traveled
through Europe with her family. This, combined with growing up as part of a
multicultural family with an American father and an Italian mother, fostered
a love of travel and a curiosity toward other cultures.
Although her only fixed
hobby is reading, Melanie has experimented with many forms of amusement,
from cross-stitching to belly-dancing. She is currently planning to learn to
play the guitar – a Christmas present from her father.
In the future, she hopes
to start her own magazine in her hometown and possibly finally find a hobby
that she can stick to.
Lindsay Downey
Editorial Assistant
Lindsay, 22, is a magazine
journalism junior at the University of Florida. Prior to beginning her
internship at Oxendine Publishing in January 2004, she wrote freelance
television reviews for Gainesville’s FYI Weekly. Her articles have
also appeared in the UF campus newspaper, The Independent Florida
Alligator, where she worked as a copy editor. Lindsay is the recruitment
chairperson for the Society of Professional Journalists and a member of the
Florida Magazine Student Association.
Lindsay hails from Cape
Coral, Fla., which she affectionately refers to as “Cape Coma.” She received
her Associate’s degree from Edison College in 2002 and is eager to finish
her Bachelor’s degree at UF and begin her career as a magazine writer and
novelist.
In her free time, Lindsay
loves going to Gator football games and watching Sex and the City.
Her short-term goals include joining a Pilates class and learning how to
cook without the microwave.

Olga Butkevich
Editorial Assistant
Olga, 18, is currently a first year student at the University of
Florida and is majoring in telecommunications and business. Before college,
she was involved with the journalism program for four years and became one
of the editors of a video yearbook organization that dealt with taking a
hardcover yearbook and transforming its events and news to the television
screen, a yearbook called The Reel. She hopes to continue her
education and attend graduate school for a master’s in Journalism.
Not only does she enjoy
writing news articles and fiction stories, but Olga also portrays a fondness
toward editing material, writing poems, screenplays, and short stories.
Originally from Kiev, Ukraine, Olga moved to the United States at the age of
5 where she remained in the city of Pembroke Pines, FL for 13 years. Her
mother, father, and sister Zina have made prior plans as to the path of her
future career, but for now Olga wants to travel the world and plan a career
in the journalism field working with anything from magazines to TV shows.
She wishes to pursue this in the state of New York and live out a fairy tale
life.
Ashley Cisneros
Editorial Assistant
There are two hobbies Ashley
Cisneros loves most in the world: music and writing. While she is an amateur
at the first hobby, she hopes to make a living in the latter. Born in Texas
to Mexican-American parents, Ashley came to Florida as a child and lived
most of her life on the sugary white sands of Panama City Beach. As a former
student government president of her high school, Ashley enjoys writing about
the positive things students are doing. The 20-year-old University of
Florida student is pursuing a degree in journalism with an emphasis in
magazines and minor in sociology.
In addition to
contributing to local newspapers and magazines, Ashley also interns for
Urban Latino magazine, based in New York City. After graduating in 2004,
she hopes to work for an entertainment magazine and one day start a family.
In her spare time, Ashley enjoys singing, dancing, listening to music, and
working on community service projects and other events with her sorority.
Laura Figueroa
Editorial Assistant
Laura, 20, is junior journalism-reporting major at the University of
Florida. Her involvement in journalism dates back to home videos capturing
her at the age of five pretending to be a television reporter. Since that
time, she has been a "Next Generation" writer for the South Florida
Sun-Sentinel newspaper, a staff writer for The Gator Times, and a
contributing writer for The Alligator.
Laura serves as the public relations director
for Hispanic Heritage Month 2003 at UF. In addition, she is historian of
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, secretary of the Multicultural Greek
Council, and a delegate of the Hispanic-Latino Student Council.
Hailing from Miami she
hopes to return and eventually gain a job writing for The Miami Herald
or working in the news department of WTVJ- NBC6.
Olivia Hull
Public Relations Assistant
Olivia, 20, is
a third year public relations major at the University of
Florida. This fall, she
will be an intern for Oxendine Publishing in the
public relations department. She is a member of the Florida Magazine Student
Association, Public Relations Student Society of America, and the Christian
Student Association.
In her spare time, Olivia
likes to read, write, and dance. One day,
she hopes to either work for a successful magazine or be in the ministry.

Jessica
Goldstein

Assistant
Jessica, 22, graduated from the University of Florida in spring 2003
with a Bachelor of Science in magazine journalism and a minor in sociology.
She will attend UF graduate school in the fall to pursue a master’s degree
in journalism. She has interned with Palm Beach
Illustrated and Palm Beach Society magazines in
Palm Beach, FL for the past two summers.
Jessica was Vice
President of Communications for her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega in fall 2002.
She was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and has lived there all her life
with her parents and Yorkshire terrier, Reggie. Jessica hopes to one day
work for a sports-related magazine, preferably tennis. Her hobbies include
playing tennis, working out, and spending time with friends and family.
Chelsea Greenwood

Assistant
Chelsea, 19, is a magazine journalism junior
at the University of Florida and a summer 2003 intern with Oxendine Publishing.
She is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Florida
Magazine Student Association, and the Golden Key International Honor
Society. Before college, Chelsea was
an active member of Students Working Against Tobacco. Her organizational
and recruiting skills helped to establish a new chapter in Pinellas County
and tripled its members within a span of two years.
In addition to taking
several classes in journalism writing, Chelsea constantly writes short
stories, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. Having moved to four
different states before the age of 15, she is an experienced traveler and
loves visiting new and exotic places. She hopes to intern with a national
magazine in New York or Los Angeles next summer. Her loftiest career goal is
to create and publish a new women’s magazine that concentrates on more than
simply shopping, makeup, and sex.

Lisa, 21, recently graduated from the University of Florida.
She majored in journalism with an emphasis in magazines. She plans to attend
graduate school at UF this fall in pursuit of a Masters degree.
Lisa’s journalism
experience includes writing for INsite magazine, the dr. gator,
and the Florida Physician. She has also served as a senior editor for
the Orange and Blue magazine. In the future, she hopes to write and
edit for a well-known national magazine.
When she is not working
at Oxendine Publishing, Lisa enjoys hanging out with her friends.

Risa Merl
Senior Editorial Assistant
Risa, 20, is a junior
pursuing a major in English, and a minor in mass communications, at the
University of Florida. She interned for Oxendine summer 2002, and is
returning to fulfill the role of Senior Editorial Assistant.
She is a teacher's
assistant for American Sign Language, and works as a lifeguard at the
University's Lake Wauburg. She is also a member of Sigma Tau Delta English
Honor Society, and the Golden Key Honor Society.
Risa has lived and
traveled on a sailboat for most of her life. In seventh grade she completed
a year of home school on her boat in the Bahamas. She loves to travel and is
an admitted Travel Channel junkie. Her hobbies include writing, snow skiing,
reading, eating sushi, going to the beach, and shopping. Risa is interested
in creative writing, but hopes to one day write for a magazine or other
media publication; such as a the Travel Channel!

Sam, 19, is a junior
majoring in public relations at the University of Florida. She has in the
past been a contributing writer for the Independent Florida Alligator
in Gainesville.
Sam is a member of Friends for Life of America, CHAMPS
mentoring program, National Society for Collegiate Scholars,
and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After graduation, Sam hopes to be a
member of the public relations team for a sports franchise or a large
independent company.
Sam was born in Teaneck, New
Jersey, but grew up in
Clearwater, Florida. She enjoys
reading, painting, scrapbooking,
and watching all kinds of sports.
Liane Edixon

Liane Edixon, 22, is an
English major at the University of
Florida. She has contributed to The Independent Florida Alligator and
NaplesNetNews.com and was also a
reporter and photographer for the Everglades Echo.
She was born and raised
in Naples, Florida and wishes to someday return there to retire. After
graduation, Liane hopes to work for
a publishing company or a production company and,
on the side, continue her life long dream
of completing her first novel. Her other dream is to turn her novel
into a screenplay and break into the movie industry.

Brenna Fisher

Brenna, 20, is a junior studying magazine journalism at the University of
Florida with an English outside concentration. Over the summer, Brenna
traveled to Spain with Florida State University international programs. The
experience allowed her to enrich her Spanish speaking skills and open her
mind to different beliefs and ideas. In the future, she hopes to travel to
different parts of the world (Italy is next on the list). She also hopes to
have her own column in a magazine someday.
Brenna is a member of the
Florida Student Magazine Association and plans to join more clubs and
organizations in the near future. When she isn't juggling her school,
homework, and job, Brenna enjoys
reading, creative writing, cooking, watching black and white movies,
and going out dancing with friends.
Emily Green
Editorial
Assistant
Emily, born in Chicago,
grew up in the west suburbs of St. Louis. After completing high school in
three years, Emily attended the
University of Colorado for the fall 2001 semester and Webster University for
the spring of 2002. She thrived as a
dance major at both of these schools but soon realized her true passion for
writing.
In fall 2002,
Emily transferred to the University of Florida as an English major
and has no plans to leave until after her graduation in spring 2005. She is
also debating getting both dance and Jewish studies minors. She is an active
leader in the Hillel Foundation, the Jewish Student Union, and KOACH, a
Conservative Jewish movement on campus.
Aside from writing,
dancing, and her involvement in the
Jewish community, Emily’s other
hobbies include singing in private voice lessons through UF’s music
department, cooking gourmet meals, doing community service at the Alachua
Regional Juvenile Detention Center, meeting new people,
and hanging out with friends.
Amy Shannon

Amy, 20, is a junior dual majoring in journalism and political
science at the University of Florida. She previously worked as a staff
writer for The Gator Times and an intern at Seabreeze Publications in
Jupiter, Fla. After graduation in May 2004, Amy plans to attend law school
and perhaps later work in media law.
In addition to her
Oxendine internship, Amy works as a resident assistant in Yulee Hall.
She stays active in Delta Zeta as the editor of her sorority’s publication,
The Lamp. She is an officer in the Society of Professional Journalists,
Florida Magazine Student Leader, and
the RA Union. Outside of school and work, Amy enjoys running, going out at
night, and hanging out with friends.
Ashley Tarbet

Ashley, 20, is a junior at the University of Florida majoring in
English and minoring in French. She is a spring 2003 intern at
Oxendine.
Raised in Ohio and South Carolina, Ashley continued her move south
with her decision to attend UF on a National Merit scholarship. She
has served as News Editor of The Gator Times and
is the current Prose Editor of
Departure: GNV, UF's prominent literary and
art magazine. This summer, she hopes to obtain an
internship in Washington, D.C. working on
publications in the humanities.
Ashley stays sane by getting a daily dose of exercise; she
especially enjoys running and competing in road races. She is an avid
reader and enjoys traveling, food, and friends.

Risa, 20, is a junior

Jamie, 20, is a magazine journalism junior at the University of Florida
and a 2002 fall intern with Oxendine Publishing. She has also worked
as a copyeditor for The Independent Florida
Alligator.
This summer Jamie hopes to intern with a national publication in either
Washington D.C. or New York City. After graduation, she plans to
pursue a master's degree in journalism.
In addition to the internship, this fall Jamie is working as a stringer
for the Alligator and hopes to later become a staff writer. She is
active in the Student Society for News Design,
College Democrats, and Golden Key National Honor
Society. She also plans to join the Florida Magazine Student
Association and the Society of Professional Journalists this year.
Outside of school, Jamie enjoys reading, photography, movies, music,
tennis and Tae Kwon Do.
Tenia King

Assistant
Tenia, 21, is a senior majoring in journalism at the University of
Florida and a fall 2002 intern at Oxendine. She has been a contributing
writer for The Independent Florida Alligator
newspaper since her freshman year. Last summer, she interned at Black
Entertainment Television in Washington, D.C. as a production assistant for
the public affairs show Lead Story.
The Boynton Beach, FL
native is a Palm Beach Post/Cox Foundation scholarship recipient.
Currently, she is a staff
writer at Fusion Magazine, which captures the Gainesville music scene.
Tenia is a telephone interviewer with UF's Bureau of Economic and
Business Research, where she takes on training, supervising and mentoring
duties.
She enjoys reading
novels, going to plays, shopping and hanging out with friends.
Maria Parra
Public Relations
Assistant
Maria Parra, 23, is a public relations major with an outside concentration
in marketing at the University of Florida. She is a fall 2002 PR
intern at Oxendine. She will be graduating this
December.
She has interned with
Alpha Productions, a student-run PR firm, as the
account executive for the Children's Home Society account. After graduation
she hopes to work in integrated communications in a South Florida
company, concentrating on the Hispanic community,
as well as try her luck in law school.
Maria was born in Bogota,
Colombia but lived the greater part of her life in
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Her hobbies include reading, writing, scrapbooking,
and traveling. She originally made a promise to herself to visit at
least one new place each year, but has visited
over three places each year since the promise was
made. Eventually, Maria hopes to write a novel about her
family and its history.
Ana Ribero

Ana, 21, is a journalism major at the University of Florida. She was born in
Colombia, South America and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida when she was
11 years old. She is working as an editorial intern at Oxendine Publishing
for the fall of 2002 as well as attending her last semester of classes at UF.
She just finished a summer internship at Biscayne Magazine, a lifestyle
publication in South Florida, and is working part-time at the Bureau of
Economic and Business Research at UF.
After graduation, Ana
hopes to travel to Europe for a few months and work at a magazine in either
Spain or Great Britain. Then she plans to return to the U.S. to work as a
staff writer at a magazine or newspaper. She dreams of one day living in San
Francisco.

Felicia Barclay

Assistant
Felicia, 21, is a journalism major at the
University of Florida and a summer 2002 intern with Oxendine Publishing.
Though she was born in Brooklyn, NY, her family is from Trinidad and Tobago.
Not only is Felicia a full-time student and an intern
at Oxendine, but she also works part-time at the Oaks Mall in Gainesville.
She has also interned and worked as an account
executive for The Independent Florida Alligator. Her career goal is
to one day become an editorial staff member of VIBE Magazine,
Black Enterprise or Cosmopolitan (three of her favorite
magazines).
For fun, Felicia enjoys spending time with friends and
speaking to her best friend of all, her mom, every chance she gets. She also
enjoys working out regularly, cooking Caribbean food and when all of her
work is complete, just being lazy.
Chelsea Ellis

Assistant
Chelsea, 20, is a journalism major at the
University of Florida and a summer 2002 intern at Oxendine. She is also
taking reporting in summer school and looking for a job to “pay the bills.”
She is a contributing writer for The Independent
Florida Alligator in Gainesville and recently received a scholarship
from the Outdoor Writer’s Association.
A lover of writing and nature, her career goal is to
work for an environmental or outdoor publication, particularly National
Geographic or Discover Magazine.
In the meantime, Chelsea is involved in Gator Band. She
marches at all the games and plays the oboe in concert and symphonic band.
She also enjoys reading, running, movies, swimming, and being outside.
Catherine Smith

Assistant
Catherine, 20, is currently a junior majoring in magazine journalism at the
University of Florida, and has just enrolled in Oxendine’s internship
program for the summer of 2002.
Aside from working at UF’s sports and concert arena, the Stephen C.
O'connell Center, and attending classes this summer, Catherine was recently
promoted to Editor of the Lifestyles section at The Gator Times in
Gainesville.
She has always wanted to write for a magazine and hopes

After graduation in 2004, Catherine plans to move to New York and begin her
career as a magazine journalist.
Her interests include attending Gator basketball and
football games, watching Lifetime movies, playing with her neighbor’s dog
and baking lots of goodies.
